Written, Not Wiped

He drove the early. He drives the late. The middle belongs to nobody, so he sits in the canteen with the flask his wife filled and lets the hours go past him.

The room hums. There is a fridge in the corner that has hummed for as long as anybody can remember, and a window that looks out on the wash bay, and a long table with the salt in the middle of it.

On the far wall is the board. Names down one side in wipe-clean marker, runs beside them, the week set out where everybody can see it. The cleaner comes through with a cloth and a spray bottle and takes last week off in one pass, the way she does every time, and the board goes back to white.

His name is half gone. The first part of it survived the cloth and the rest is a gray smear across the line.

He looks at it longer than a man ought to look at a board. Because somewhere in the last few years, without a day he could point to, he started to think of himself the way the week thinks of him: a name that goes up, a name that comes off, a man who covers.

Then he gets up, and without deciding to do it he wipes the smear away with his sleeve, because half a name looks worse than no name at all. He sits back down. He pours the last of the flask.

The fridge hums. There is another hour and a half of the middle to get through, and then he takes the late out and comes home when the road is empty.

You have a board of your own somewhere, and you have been reading your name off it for a while now. So let us go and get the other name, the one that was cut in rather than written up.

Nobody sat you down and renamed you

That is the part that makes it so hard to argue with. There was no morning where somebody looked you in the eye and told you what you had become. It arrived by accumulation.

A word at a desk. A letter with a date on it. The same conversation about the same shortfall for the fourth year running. Being the one who covers, the one who manages, the one who does not say. None of it announced itself as a naming. All of it was writing.

And here is what I have come to say, before another word of teaching: you are not what those years wrote over you. Scripture puts the truest thing about you in the mouth of God rather than in the mouth of a circumstance, and it says you are called a child of God, which is what you are and not what you are working towards (1 John 3:1). His Spirit is the one who makes that land in a man in a canteen instead of staying a sentence on a page.

The board tells the depot who is driving. It was never asked to say who anybody is, and it has never claimed to. What happened, quietly, is that a man let the two become one thing.

Engraved, not written up

There is a line in Isaiah spoken to people who had decided God had forgotten them. They said so out loud, in those words, and the answer they got did not tell them off for saying it.

Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.Isaiah 49:16

Graven. Cut in. Not written up in marker on a surface that gets cleared every week, and not typed into a system that updates overnight. Cut into the palms of the hands of God, where a thing stays because of what it was cut into, not because somebody remembered to leave it.

You are engraved, and it is not conditional on the week you have had. The written word says the Lord knows those who are His (2 Timothy 2:19), and that knowing does not go up and down with an account balance. His Spirit is the one who cries Father inside you on the mornings you would never have started that sentence yourself (Romans 8:15), and that is the surest evidence in the world of whose you are.

And notice who was speaking in that chapter. It was not the confident. It was people who had already concluded they had been left behind, and God answered the conclusion rather than the tone of it.

The name is not being offered instead of the money

I want to be careful here, because this is the exact point where a page like this one turns into a consolation prize, and you would be right to walk away from that.

So let me say it plainly. What God calls you does not put anything in a cupboard. It does not clear a letter. It is not offered to you as a swap, and nobody here is asking you to trade the need for the name and go away quiet.

The need is real, it is not settled, and God has not stopped hearing about it. He calls His own sheep by name and He leads them out (John 10:3), and both halves of that verse belong to the same shepherd: the naming and the leading, not one instead of the other.

What is settled, today, is who you are before Him. That is not a smaller thing than the money. It is a different thing from the money, and it is the one thing in this depot that the week has no authority to overwrite.

You have a name that was given rather than earned, and the written word gives it in the same breath as it gives you the Spirit who confirms it (Galatians 4:6). His Spirit says child of God. The board says covering the late. Only one of those was ever about you.
