Nothing In The Book On Thursday

This message is for to bring a bare material need to God without dressing it up, sitting in her own chair in a salon on a Tuesday afternoon with an empty page in her book and a rent on the chair she is paying anyway

Yvonne rents the second chair. Not the salon, just the chair, the one by the window with the good light, which is why she took it in the first place and why she has kept it as long as she has.

It is Tuesday. She had one in at eleven, a trim for a woman who has been coming to her since the old place, and there is nobody after. She sweeps anyway. There is nothing on the floor to sweep. She sweeps it, because a broom in your hands is better than a phone in your hands.

Salma has the first chair and Salma is booked through until six. That is not Salma's fault, and Yvonne has never once managed to get her own face to agree with that.

Half past two. She sits down in her own chair, facing her own mirror, because there is nowhere else in the salon to sit that belongs to her.

And she decides to pray about it, which she has not properly done in weeks.

Here is what comes out of her mouth. Father, I just thank You for this season, and I ask that You would teach me whatever it is You are trying to teach me in it, and I pray that You would help me to trust You with the shop, and to be a light to Salma, and.

And she stops. Because none of that is what she came to say.

What she came to say is that there is nothing in the book on Thursday. Nothing Friday either. That she is paying for a chair she has been sitting in on her own. That she is frightened, and she does not know how to put that in front of God without first turning it into something that sounds like church.

You do that too. Everybody does it. And in all the years you have been doing it, nobody has ever once said out loud in front of you that it is happening.

Nothing In The Book On Thursday

The Sentence Before The Sentence

There is a moment between the need arriving in your chest and the words leaving your mouth, and it is very short, and almost everything happens in it.

In that moment you translate. The bare thing goes in and something acceptable comes out. Nothing in the book on Thursday goes in, and out comes provision and season and trust and Your perfect timing. You did not decide to do that. Nobody taught you to do it on purpose. You picked it up the way people pick up an accent, from rooms where the polished version was the only version anybody ever said out loud.

And here is what it has cost you, and I want to name the cost before I go near the cure. Every time you translate, you arrive in front of God carrying a document instead of a need, and then you wonder why the conversation felt like an appointment.

Now hear what Jesus said about this, in the middle of teaching people how to pray at all.

"And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him."Matthew 6:7 and 8

Read the reason He gives, because it is not the reason people expect. He does not say the long phrases are rude. He says they are unnecessary. Your Father already knows. The translating was never buying you anything, because the information was in the room before you walked in with it.

So take this where you sit. You are already known, entirely and in detail, by the God you have been carefully preparing a version for. That is not my encouragement to you, it is Matthew 6:8 in the written word, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a verse like that land in the chest rather than sitting in the head.

And then, having said that, watch what Jesus does next, because it is the part that undoes the argument you are about to make. He teaches them a prayer. And the fourth line of it is bread.

Not sustenance. Not provision for this season. Bread. The most ordinary, edible, countable thing in the house, put by Jesus into the middle of the model prayer for all time (Matthew 6:11), which means the bare material need is not the part of your prayer you should be embarrassed about. It is the part He wrote in Himself.

He Is Not Embarrassed By The Thing Itself

Somewhere along the way you got the idea that God is interested in the spiritual portion of your life and is being politely patient about the rest of it.

Go and look at how He handles people in trouble and that idea will not survive the afternoon.

A prophet collapses under a bush and asks to die, and God sends an angel, and the angel does not open with a rebuke or a lesson. He gives him food and lets him sleep, then wakes him and gives him food again (1 Kings 19:5 to 7). A woman is sent out into the desert with a child and no water, and God does not begin by correcting her theology; He shows her a well.

You are dealing with a God who feeds people before He explains anything to them, and His word has been telling you that in plain narrative since the beginning, and His Spirit is the one who has kept those stories in reach until the morning you actually needed them.

Now let me guard this, because the guard matters as much as the point. I am not handing you a better technique. Saying it plainly is not a superior method that gets a superior result, and if I let you hear it that way I will have simply swapped one polished version for another, and you will be back in the same chair next Tuesday wondering whether you said it bare enough.

There is no wording that works. There is a Father who knows, and there is you, and the words are only the means by which the two of you are in the same room. Scripture never once records God asking anybody to go away and say it again properly, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that room real rather than imagined.

Asking Him Costs Nothing At All

Here is the other half of what has been keeping you quiet, and it is heavier than the wording.

Somewhere in the last few years you started rationing. Not consciously. You began treating your requests like something with a limited supply, as though God has a patience that runs down and you had better not spend it on the small stuff, or on the same stuff again, or on money, of all things.

Jesus talked directly about that. He asked what kind of father hands his child a stone when the child asks for bread, or a serpent when the child asks for a fish, and then He said that if you, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more your Father in heaven (Luke 11:11 to 13).

You have a Father who is not rationing, and you have not exhausted anything, and Scripture puts the words how much more in the mouth of Jesus precisely so that no child of God would ever stand there doing sums about whether to ask, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is settling that in you while you read.

And if this has gone as far as real danger, food or a home, then reach for real help today and reach for it with your head up. That is not a lapse of faith. Asking a person for help is not the opposite of asking God.

The breakthrough

Here is the part nobody tells you, and it is the reason the plain sentence is safe.

You are not the only one speaking. Scripture says that we do not know what to pray for as we ought, and that the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:26). Read that again where you are sitting. The Spirit of God is not standing back marking your sentence for accuracy. He is in it with you, carrying the thing further in than your wording could ever have taken it.

So the plain words are not a risk. Whatever you get out of your mouth, however badly, He is already carrying it, and the burden of getting the prayer right was never on you and it is not on you now.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you are sitting. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, and it is not issued on the strength of what is in your book. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely brave. What God does about the money is His, however He answers, and nothing on this page pretends to know.

  1. Empty page in my book, you are real and you are not a subject God finds awkward. Matthew 6:8 says my Father knows what I need before I ask Him, and Jesus put bread into the middle of the prayer He taught with His own mouth. In the name of Jesus I say you out loud exactly as you stand, and I do not dress you up first.
  2. Habit of translating before I speak, you are not reverence and you have no work left in this room. The written word gives me a Father who already knows, and the Holy Spirit takes my plainest sentence and carries it further in than my wording ever could. What I need is not too small to say and it is not too bare to be heard.
  3. Lord, You are the Father who knows before the asking, and You have never once needed me to make this sound better than it is. I thank You, because Matthew 6:11 put bread in the prayer and You have never been embarrassed by one thing on my list. I am telling You the bare thing today, in the words I would use to a friend, and I am saying it once.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
