There Is A Word For This And It Is Short

Half past nine, and the app takes a moment to load because the signal in the flat is what it is.

Monday, nothing. Tuesday, nothing. Wednesday, four hours in the afternoon. Thursday, nothing. He scrolls back up and does it again in case the screen was still loading, and it was not still loading.

Nobody rang. Nobody was ever going to ring. He worked six days last week and he was good at it, and none of that appears anywhere on this screen.

He knows the aisles by their smell. The headset gives him a location and a number and he goes and gets it, and when the shelf is empty there is a word for that, and the word is short. You press the button and you say it and you move on. The system does not ask him to explain himself. It does not want a reason or an apology. It takes the count that is actually there and it carries on.

So he closes the app and puts the phone face down and starts to pray, and this is the part he cannot get right.

He begins by thanking God for the flat and for his health, which he means, and then he works round to the thing sideways, and by the time he arrives at it he has made it sound smaller and holier than it is. He says amen. And he sits there knowing he has not said it.

You have sat in that exact chair, or you would not be here. So let us go straight at it.

The introduction you keep writing

There is a thing believers do before they ask God for something material, and almost nobody has ever said it out loud, so I will.

We write an introduction. We open with the gratitude, which is real, and then we widen it out to other people who have it worse, which is also real, and then we translate the actual need into something that sounds less like money and more like a sermon. And by the time we get to the sentence that matters, we have talked ourselves down to a whisper and we finish without having said it.

It is not hypocrisy. It is embarrassment. Somewhere along the way you picked up the idea that a bare material need is a low sort of thing to bring, and that God receives the spiritual ones properly and tolerates the rest.

So hear this as settled, before we go a line further: you are welcome to bring Him the bare thing exactly as it is. Philippians 4:6 says in everything, by prayer and supplication, let your requests be made known to God, and the word there is the plainest one in the language for asking, the word a man uses at a door. The Holy Spirit has never once winced at what came out of your mouth in a flat at half past nine at night.

He is not embarrassed by what you need

Look at what Jesus put in the middle of the prayer He taught. Not health, not calling, not a nation. Bread. Today's, in Matthew 6:11, the ordinary thing on a table that a person needs before tomorrow and cannot make appear.

He put the material need in the model prayer Himself, in the mouths of everybody who would ever pray it, and He put it there without a single word of apology around it. That is not an accident and it is not a concession to weak believers.

You have a Father who already knows what is on the app and what is not, and asking Him does not inform Him of anything. Matthew 6:8 says He knows what you need before you ask Him, and the Holy Spirit did not preserve that line to make asking pointless. He preserved it to take the fear out of it. You are not building a case in front of somebody who might rule against you. You are speaking to somebody who already has the whole file open and loves you.

And that word from the warehouse is the right one. Short. It is not a complaint and it is not a confession. It is a count. The shelf holds what it holds and the honest number goes up the line, and nobody in that building has ever been ashamed to say it.

This is not a technique and it never becomes one

Here is where I have to be careful with you, because this is exactly where a page like this can do damage.

I am not handing you a better way to word it. There is no arrangement in which the plainer prayer works and the awkward one fails, and if I let you leave here thinking there is, I will have swapped one performance for another and given you a new thing to get wrong at half past nine at night.

The plainness is not a method. It is a relief. You are already heard, right now, in the prayer you fumbled last night and finished badly, and the Holy Spirit is the reason. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray as we ought, and He Himself intercedes with groanings too deep for words. Read that again slowly. The written word says outright that not knowing how to say it is the normal condition of a praying person, and that Someone inside you is already carrying the thing you could not get out.

So the badly worded ones went up. All of them. The sideways one and the whispered one and the one you gave up on halfway through, and He did not sort them into a pile.
