The rota goes up at nine on a Sunday, and he is sitting on the edge of the bed with the phone in both hands.
He refreshes. It loads. One short shift on the Tuesday, and then nothing. He scrolls down through the rest of the week and there is nothing there either, and the week after is not up yet.
Last week he did five days. Nobody has sent him a message. No reason is given, because a reason is not a thing the app has ever offered, and there is nobody to ask at nine on a Sunday night.
He reads it again to be sure he read it right the first time. He read it right.
Downstairs somebody is watching something with the sound low. He can hear the laugh track coming up through the floor.
On the pick line the handheld does not use his name. It uses the number they gave him at induction. It says that number at the start of every task, all shift, every shift, and he has been there long enough now that he answers to the number faster than he answers to his name.
That is the part he has never said to anybody. Not the hours. The other thing. That somewhere in the last couple of years he began to think the number was the more accurate of the two.
If you know exactly what that is, then this is for you, and we are going to go slowly.

What that screen is actually able to say
A rota can tell you how many shifts there are. That is the entire list of things it knows.
It cannot tell you what you are worth, because worth is not a field it holds. It cannot tell you whether you are wanted, because wanting is not a thing a scheduling system does. And it was never handed the authority to name a person. Naming is an act, and an act requires standing, and the written word puts that standing with God, with the Holy Spirit as the one who carries a name into the person it belongs to.
To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.Revelation 2:17
Sit with the strangeness of that for a moment, because I think it was written for exactly this. A name that no man knows. Not printed, not searchable, not on a badge, not held on any system anywhere, and not available to be read off by anybody who has decided what you are.
You have a name in that verse. It is not a reward being dangled and it is not a prize for coping well: it is written into Scripture as a thing given, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it a live word tonight instead of a beautiful sentence about somebody else. A name only He and you can read cannot be cut on a Sunday, because the people who cut the shifts were never given the file.
And I want to be careful with the word new there, because it does the opposite of what people assume. It does not mean God swaps you for a different man. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:23), and they are the same mercies, given fresh, to the same person, every single day. You are not being replaced. You are being called what you actually are, by the only voice with the standing to do it.
Answering to the wrong one is not a character fault
Here is how it happened, and it is worth knowing, because you have probably been quietly blaming yourself for it. Scripture is not naive about what repetition does to a person, and neither is the Holy Spirit who inspired it.
Something said to a person hundreds of times a day becomes the thing they answer to. That is not weakness and it is not a lack of faith. It is how a human being is built, and the same mechanism is why a soldier hears his surname and turns before he thinks. Your name has been said to you rarely for two years. The number has been said to you all day, every day, in your ear, at the start of every task.
You are not in the wrong for that. Scripture is honest about how much repetition does to a person, which is exactly why it tells us to keep His words in front of our eyes and on our doorposts and in our mouths, morning and evening (Deuteronomy 11:18 to 19), and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps bringing them back to mind when the day has been loud (John 14:26).
So this is not a telling off. Nobody is asking you to feel differently about the warehouse or to be grateful for the number. We are simply going to say the other thing out loud for once, because it has been a long while since anything said it to you.
This is not offered instead of the hours
I need to be plain here, because the wrong version of this article would be an insult and you would smell it straight away.
The hours matter. What you are short of is real and it is not a spiritual illusion, and nothing on this page is going to hand you a name and call that the same thing as work. If you can get more shifts somewhere, get them. If there is help you are entitled to, take it with both hands and take it without a flicker of shame. Faith has hands, the written word never once treats using them as a failure of trust, and the Holy Spirit is not the least bit offended by a man out looking for work.
What I am saying is a different thing, and it is not the smaller of the two. It is the older one.
Jesus described Himself as the shepherd who calls His own sheep by name and leads them out (John 10:3), and He did not say He calls them by number, by contract or by availability. You belong to that voice. You are one of the ones He calls, and that is not a compensation for the rota, it is simply true at nine on a Sunday and it was true last Tuesday as well, held there in Scripture and made living in you by His Spirit rather than by how the week is looking.
Two true things, standing at once. The shifts are gone this week. He calls you by name. Neither of those cancels the other and you are allowed to hold both.
So the whole of it is this: say the name, and let it come from where it actually comes from.
> And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son. > Galatians 4:6 and 7
Read where that cry starts. Not on a badge, not in a contract, not from a manager who remembered your name once. Inside you, by His own Spirit, put there by God Himself.
You are His today. That is not a status that goes up and down with the week, because sonship is not a shift pattern, and the written word says it plainly enough that you can go and check it yourself rather than taking my word for any of it. His Spirit is crying Father inside you while the rota says what it says.
You have a name that predates the induction and outlasts the contract. Speak it out loud, and hear what God says about the person who owns it, and do not let one syllable of that sentence be about hours.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing up, in your own voice. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, and it is not issued on the strength of what you have or what you are earning. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely brave. What God does about the shifts is His, however He answers, and nothing on this page pretends to know.
- Rota that went up at nine, you are a list of hours and you are not a document about me. Scripture says my Shepherd calls His own sheep by name and leads them out, and no system in that building was ever handed the authority to rename one of them. In the name of Jesus I am reading you as hours tonight and as nothing else.
- Number I answer to faster than my name, you are a login and you are not a naming. The written word keeps a white stone with a name on it that only the Giver and the receiver can read, and the Holy Spirit in me is the witness that the stone is mine. You get the aisles and He gets me.
- Father, You call Your own by name and lead them out, and You have never once called me by a number. Scripture says You sent the Spirit of Your Son into my heart to cry Abba, so the name I answer to starts inside me and comes from You, and never off a screen. I thank You, because I am Yours tonight, and I am saying my name out loud.
