He Hears ThisMatthew 6:8

The Voice I Put On To Pray

This message is for To bring the bare thing he actually needs to God, sitting in a depot canteen in the long gap between the two halves of a split shift, instead of translating it into a voice he does not use anywhere else.

The canteen at the depot smells of the urn and of somebody's chips from an hour ago. There are four plastic chairs at his table and he has all four to himself, because at this time of day the place is nearly empty.

He is between the halves. Out at half five, back in at half nine, and nothing now until the two o'clock. He could go home, except home is forty minutes each way and the sitting down is the only rest in it.

So he has his flask, and his sandwich, and the long gap. And because the gap is the only quiet he gets, this is where he prays. He has done it for years. It is a good habit and he is not going to give it up.

He starts. Lord, You know our situation, and we thank You for Your faithfulness, and we ask that You would provide for the needs of this household according to Your will.

Then he stops, with the flask cup halfway up, because he can hear himself.

He does not talk like that. He does not talk like that to his wife, to his mate on the six, to the boy, to anybody at all. Somewhere between the thought and the mouth there is a machine that takes the real sentence and hands back a churchy one, and it has been running so long he had stopped noticing it.

The real sentence, the one the machine was translating, is four words long and he has never once said it out loud to God. We are short again.

He puts the cup down. The urn ticks. Twenty past ten in an empty canteen, and a man who has prayed every working day for years is sitting there wondering why the only conversation in his life that has a costume on it is that one.

The Voice I Put On To Pray

The voice we put on

You know the voice. Half of us have one and nobody was taught it on purpose. It arrives out of hearing other people pray, and it takes an ordinary need and returns it wrapped: provision instead of short, sustenance instead of the shop, wisdom in this season instead of I do not know what we do now.

Let me say the wound before I lift anything off it. The costume is not put on because a man is proud. It goes on because somewhere underneath he believes the bare sentence is not fit to be brought. Too small. Too worldly. Too much like complaining. Somewhere in him the plain thing needs improving before it goes up.

So hear this said over you before we go any further. You are welcome in front of God with the bare thing, exactly as it sits, in the words you would use to a friend. That is not a soft opinion of mine. Hebrews 4:16 tells you to come boldly to the throne of grace to find help in time of need, and the Holy Spirit is the one who walks a person through that door without a change of clothes.

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.Matthew 6:8

Read who that is said to. It is said to people worried about food and clothes, and it is not a rebuke for asking. It is the removal of a burden: you are not informing Him, and you are not persuading Him, so the wording is not carrying the weight you have been making it carry.

He knew what you needed before the canteen door shut behind you. He knew it in the spring when it started, and He was not shocked then either. That line was written down for people sitting exactly there, and the Holy Spirit has been at work in every prayer you have prayed since.

He is not embarrassed by what you need

Here is a thing worth sitting with. The God who made the hillside and the rain that runs off it is not squeamish about a shopping list.

Where I grew up, the water off a slope finds its own way down. Nobody builds a channel for rain. It takes the shortest honest route through the ground it is given, and the route is not pretty and it works. A prayer is water, not architecture. It has one job, which is to get from the man to God, and every ornament put on it is another meter of pipe for something that was already running downhill.

You have a Father who is not embarrassed by what you need, and you are not lowering the tone of heaven by naming it. Scripture has Him counting hairs and feeding sparrows in the same breath as it has Him running the nations (Matthew 10:29 and 30), and the Holy Spirit is not standing between you and Him with a red pen and a better draft.

Now I want to be careful, because there is a wrong turning right here and it is the commonest one on this subject. Nobody is telling you that plain words are a better method. This is not a technique, and there is no wording anywhere, plain or ornate, that works on God like a key in a lock. If a man prayed in the churchy voice for eleven years, God heard him for eleven years. Every one of those prayers landed.

What is being taken off you is not a wrong method. It is the labor. The costume was never required, and the effort of dressing it went into something that was never being weighed.

What the plain sentence actually does

So why say it plainly at all, if He knows it already and the wording is not the lever?

Because of what it does in the man who says it. There is a difference between a person who has told God the truth and a person who has been managing God for years, and the difference is not in God.

I pour out my complaint before him; I tell my trouble before him.Psalm 142:2

That is a man in a cave with nothing, and he tells it. Not a summary, not a version, and not the improved edition. And the New Testament says the same thing from the other side: we do not even know what to pray for as we ought, so the Spirit Himself helps us in our weakness (Romans 8:26).

Read that carefully, because it lands where the costume was standing. The written word has already conceded that you cannot get the words right, and it does not treat that as a problem to be solved by you. You have a helper in the room whose job is precisely that gap, and He has been doing it in every prayer you have ever prayed in the wrong voice.

You are heard. Not on the days the wording comes out well, and not because the phrasing improved: you are heard because you are His, and the Holy Spirit carries what you meant along with what you managed to say.

The breakthrough

Say it once. Out loud. In the words you would use to a friend.

Not a speech, not a preamble, not the whole history of how it got like this. One sentence, the real one, the four words the machine has been translating for years. We are short again. That is a whole prayer. It has a person in it and it is addressed to God, and that is all a prayer has ever needed.

You have the standing to speak to Him like that, and it is not issued on the strength of getting the words right. It is yours in Christ, who opened that door with His own body (Hebrews 10:19 and 20), the written word calls that boldness, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a flat sentence in an empty canteen a thing said to the living God rather than a man muttering over a flask.

And nothing is asked of you in return for it. Not a payment, not a promise, not a better attitude by Sunday. Asking Him costs you nothing at all.

Declare this over yourself

Say these sitting where you are, in your own voice, the one you use all day. The right to speak to God like this is yours in Christ and it was never issued on the strength of the phrasing. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely honest, and what God does about the need is His to do, however He answers. Nothing on this page pretends to know.

  1. Shortfall I have been translating into church words, you are one plain sentence and you are not too small to say. Matthew 6:8 says my Father knew what I needed before I opened my mouth, so there is nothing here to inform Him of and nothing to improve. In the name of Jesus I say you flat and I say you once, and then I leave you with Him.
  2. Idea that God is embarrassed by what I need, you are not from Him and you never came out of His word. The written word tells me to come boldly to find help in time of need, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what I meant when the words came out wrong. Nothing about me needs dressing before I get to my Father, and I am going in as I am.
  3. Father, You are the God who counts the sparrows and runs the nations in the same breath, and You have heard every prayer I ever prayed in the wrong voice. I thank You, because Your written word says the Spirit Himself helps me in my weakness, and that help was working in me for years before I noticed it. I am telling You the plain thing now, and I am not preparing to pray any more.
