Thursday afternoon, and next month's rota is lying on the counter by the till.
She is sweeping. There is almost nothing on the floor to sweep and she sweeps it anyway, because a chair you rent is a chair you keep properly whether or not anybody sat in it.
It used to be full six weeks out. Then it thinned. Not a crash, a thinning, the way hair thins, a person at a time. A canceled Saturday. A woman who moved out to her daughter's. Somebody's color stretched from five weeks to eight and then to whenever. Until the week has three names in it and two of them are half an hour.
The rota is a sheet of paper with the month ruled into days. The others have filled theirs in already. Pen, all of them, straight across the days they want, confident as anything.
She picks up a pencil.
She writes her name small, up in the corner of the days, in pencil, so that it can be rubbed out cleanly if it turns out she should not have claimed them.
Then she stands there holding the pencil, and she knows exactly why she did that. She has known for a while. She has never once said it out loud to anybody, and it is this: somewhere in the last couple of years, she started agreeing with the diary about who she is.
That is you as well, or you would not have opened this. So let us talk about what has been writing your name lately.

The diary has been answering a question nobody asked it
A diary is a record of what happened. That is its entire job and it is very good at it. What it has never had is the authority to say what a person is.
But somewhere along the way it started answering that question anyway, and it answered it every single working day, in your own handwriting, for years. Nothing else in your life speaks that often. A thing that speaks every day eventually starts to sound like the truth, and it does not even have to be arguing with you. It just has to be there, open, on the counter, every morning.
So let me say the true thing over you, and hear it as finished rather than as kindness. You are not what the diary says you are. You were not what it said when it was full six weeks out either, and if it fills again next spring you will not be that.
That is not my opinion of you. Ephesians 1:4 says you were chosen in Him before the world was founded, which is a date no appointment book can reach back past, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old sentence like that arrive in a person on a Thursday afternoon with a broom in her hand.
This is not a nice name handed over instead of the work
I want to deal with the obvious thing early, because you will be suspicious of it otherwise, and you should be.
Nothing on this page is being offered to you in place of the bookings. The thinned week is real. The chair rent is real. What you need is genuinely needed, and God has not asked you to swap it for a warm feeling about yourself, and if anybody ever hands you a spiritual identity as compensation for an empty diary, put it down.
What is being handed over here is not compensation. It is the thing that was underneath the whole time, and you have it already. You had it when the book was full six weeks out as well, and you simply had less reason to go looking for it then.
Nor is this about how you come across to anybody in that salon. Not the woman in pen on the rota. Not the owner. Not the client who moved away. The name in question is the one God uses when there is nobody in the room, and 1 Samuel 16:7 says He looks at the heart rather than at the outward thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been calling you that already, quietly, under all of it.
What He writes it on
To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.Revelation 2:17
Look at how careful that is. Not a name announced. Not a name read out. A name written on a stone and put into a person's hand, and nobody else can even read it, which means it cannot be checked against anybody's rota and cannot be revised by anybody's opinion of your Thursday.
And notice the material. Not paper, and certainly not pencil. Stone, with the name written into it.
That is the difference this whole article turns on. Everything you have written about yourself lately has been in pencil, small, in the corner, ready to be rubbed out. Everything He has written about you is graven, and Isaiah 49:16 says He graved you on the palms of His own hands, and graven does not rub out and was never meant to. You have a name from Him already. It is not pending, it is not under review, and the Holy Spirit inside you is the standing witness to it on the days it does not feel like anything at all.
Naming is one of God's oldest habits and He has never once done it based on a person's circumstances at the time.
Abram was renamed father of a multitude while he had no child. Jacob was renamed while he was limping. Simon was called a rock on the strength of nothing anybody could see that morning, and it stuck, and it turned out to be accurate. God names forward, out of Himself, and the evidence catches up or it does not, and either way the name stands.
You have the standing to say out loud what He has already said about you, and it is not boasting and it is not positive thinking. It is agreement with the written word, spoken by somebody who is in Christ and has the right to repeat what her Father said, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that repetition living rather than merely brave.
So what is settled here is not the diary. Nobody on this page knows what next month does. What is settled is that the balance has no authority to name you, the rota has no authority to name you, and the thing you have been quietly agreeing with has no standing in the matter at all.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you are standing, broom or no broom. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, and it is not issued on the strength of what is in the book next month. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely brave. What God does about the money is His, however He answers, and nothing on this page pretends to know.
- Empty week in the diary, you are a record of what happened and you are not a record of what I am. Isaiah 49:16 says God graved me on the palms of His own hands, and graved is not a thing that rubs out. In the name of Jesus I read you as a week, and I do not read you as a name.
- Habit of writing myself in pencil, you go now, and the corner of the page is not where I live. His word says I was chosen in Him before the world was founded, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps saying it inside me on the afternoons I cannot hear it. What I am is written where nothing rubs it out, and my name goes on in pen.
- Lord, You are the God who writes a name on a white stone and puts it into a person's own hand. I thank You, because Revelation 2:17 says nobody else even reads that name, so there is nothing in my month for it to be checked against. My name is what You call me, and I have put the pencil down.
