The voice in the headset gives him one location at a time. Aisle, bay, level, quantity. He picks it, he says the check digits back, and only then does the voice give him the next one.
He has worked out that he prefers it that way. A whole list would sit on him. The voice does not care what he prefers; it just waits, and then it speaks again, and the tote fills up and the trolley gets heavy and the night goes by in the only way a night on the pick face ever goes by, which is one location at a time.
Near the end, out by the dock doors where the cold comes in off the yard, the supervisor says it. Not unkindly. He is holding two coffees and one of them is for him. He says the volumes are down on the big contract and they are trimming the lines, and then he says something else about the frost, and then he goes.
That is how it arrives. Not in a letter. In a sentence, sideways, from a decent man with a coffee in each hand.
He finishes the shift. He picks it properly, every location, right to the last one, because a job done badly is still a job done and he is not going to be the man who stopped trying at four in the morning.
Then he is home, and the kettle goes on, and he does not put the light in the kitchen on because the one over the cooker is enough. He opens the app, and next week is there, and next week is almost nothing.
And then it starts. The sequence. The one that begins with the week on the screen and goes forward, step by step, in perfect order, each step following properly from the one before it, all the way down to the end.
He has run it so many times he could do it with his eyes shut, and he is going to run it again now, at two in the morning, sitting in his coat.
And you know exactly how that feels, or you would not still be awake reading this.

The man who wrote about new mercies was sitting in a ruin
Somebody has probably said new every morning to you in a bright voice, on a good day, with a nice picture behind it. So let me tell you where that sentence was actually written and who was holding the pen.
The city was burnt. The walls were down. The man writing it had watched people he knew starve, and a few lines before the famous part he says this: my strength and my hope is perished from the Lord (Lamentations 3:18). That is not a wobble. That is a man saying his hope has gone.
Then, with nothing whatsoever having improved outside the window:
This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.Lamentations 3:21 to 23
Nothing changed. The rubble was still rubble in the morning. What happened was a recall to mind, and the Holy Spirit put that whole sequence into the written record in that order so that no believer would ever have to wait for the walls to go back up before the mercies counted.
So hear this while the kettle is still going. You have tomorrow's mercy already assigned to you, not because the week on your screen looks survivable, but because His compassions fail not, and that is written down rather than hoped for.
Your fear is doing arithmetic, and the arithmetic is correct
I am not going to tell you that the sum in your head is wrong. It is not wrong. That is the part that makes this category so hard and it is the part most articles quietly skip.
There is no buffer. One thing going wrong would take the whole structure down, and that is known because it has been checked, repeatedly, and it comes out the same every time. A person who has run that sum honestly is not being faithless. They are being accurate.
And nowhere in Scripture does God call an accurate fear unbelief. He never once tells the widow at Zarephath that her jar is fuller than she thinks. Jesus does not say tomorrow will hold nothing troubling; He says sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof (Matthew 6:34), which is a sentence that assumes the trouble is real and dates it.
So keep planning. Keep looking for the hours. If there is help within reach, go and get it, today, and do not let one religious thought slow you down on the way, because faith has hands and using them is the whole point of having them.
What has to go is not the planning. It is the rehearsal. The sum done once is management. The sum done for the fifth time in the dark, at two in the morning, in your coat, is a man being made to live through a week that has not happened yet.
You have the standing to put that rehearsal down tonight. That is not me being encouraging: casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you (1 Peter 5:7) is an instruction issued to people who genuinely had the care, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the weight when your hands open.
The headset only ever gives you the next location
Here is the mercy hidden in the way your own shift works.
The voice does not read you the list. If it did, you would be carrying every location on the floor from the first hour, and no man alive can carry a floor. It gives you one, waits for the check digits, and gives you the next one, and that is why a whole night is possible at all.
God has never issued grace any other way. He gave that generation bread for the day and it did not keep overnight, and He did it for years without once explaining Himself. He taught His own people to ask for daily bread in the prayer He wrote for them (Matthew 6:11), and He put the mercies on a morning cycle rather than in a warehouse.
That is not God being stingy with you. That is the only shape a human being can actually hold.
You have today's strength today, in full, and it is enough for today because that is exactly what it was measured for. His word says as thy days, so shall thy strength be (Deuteronomy 33:25), and the same Spirit who has got you to the end of every shift you have ever doubted you could finish is not going to be short on Thursday.
Tomorrow belongs to Him and it is not yours to carry tonight.
That is not a way of saying tomorrow will be fine. I do not know whether it will be. Nothing on this page pretends to know what next week holds, and any site that tells you it does has sold you something.
What I know is where He already is. He is standing in next week now, at full strength, and He is not going to arrive there behind you, out of breath, having been caught out by a trimmed line at a distribution center. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep (Psalm 121:4), and the God who does not sleep is not being kept awake by your week the way you are.
You are held tonight by that same God, and the Holy Spirit is the proof of it in you rather than a feeling you have to produce first. What is yours right now is tonight and the strength for it. Tomorrow is His, and He is already standing in it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing in your own kitchen. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, and it is not issued on the strength of what next week holds. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely brave. What God does about the money is His, however He answers, and nothing on this page pretends to know.
- Week with almost nothing on it, you are real and I am not going to argue with you. What you are is next week, and next week is not mine to carry tonight, because the man who wrote that the mercies are new every morning wrote it sitting in a burnt city with nothing at all put right (Lamentations 3:23). In the name of Jesus I am leaving you where you stand until you get here.
- Sequence I run at two in the morning, you have had your last showing tonight. My God gives strength by the day and He measured mine for today, exactly as it is written (Deuteronomy 33:25), and His Spirit is the one holding the weight the moment my hands open. In the name of Jesus, stop, because I am not living through a week twice for you.
- Lord, You are already standing in next week and You will not arrive there out of breath. I thank You, because Your compassions fail not exactly as it stands written, because You have never once missed a morning, and because You have kept me to the end of every shift I did not think I could finish. Tonight I am naming one good thing out loud, and I am putting the sum down until it is light.
