Faith Still Standing2 Corinthians 4:8

The Hour The Boats Used To Go

This message is for to hear honestly, standing at a landing window at twenty past four with an empty jobs list on his phone, what faith actually does and does not do about the trade that went

He wakes at twenty past four, because his body still keeps the boat hour, and the boat has been gone four winters.

He lies there a while and listens to the gulls starting up over the roof. Then he goes down and fills the kettle carefully so the noise does not wake her, and he carries the tea to the window on the landing, the one that looks over the harbor wall.

There are lights on down there. Somebody is going out on the tide. Not him.

He opens the phone. The app takes its time, and then it shows him what it shows him most mornings, which is an empty list and a small wheel that keeps turning. There might be a van run by seven. There might be a few hours on the fish counter in the next town, if the manager remembers his name. He refreshes it twice, then puts the phone face down on the sill, because refreshing is a thing a man can do all morning and it has never once added a job to the list.

He knows this harbor the way you know a room in the dark. He knows which skipper takes which channel. He can tell the state of the tide without looking it up. He knows what the ice house smells like in July. All of that is still in him and there is nowhere left to put any of it.

So he prays at the window with the tea going cold. The same prayer, four years, and he has stopped listening to himself say it, which is a thing he would not admit out loud to anybody in this town.

Then he puts the bin out, because it is Tuesday.

Something went, and it was not his faith. His faith is standing at that window with a cold cup in its hand, and so is yours, or you would not have opened this.

The Hour The Boats Used To Go

What went, and what did not

Let me set the two of them side by side, slowly, because they have been filed under one heading in your head for years and they were never the same thing.

The trade went. That is true, it is not a small thing, and I am not going to spiritualize it or tell you it was quietly a door all along. A way of working that a whole town was built on went, and you were standing in it when it did.

And your faith did not go with it. You are a believer at a landing window before five in the morning talking to God about a harbor, and the written word has a phrase for that exact man. Paul set it down, and the Holy Spirit has never once moved the comma out of the middle of it.

We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.2 Corinthians 4:8 and 9

Look at how carefully he does that. He does not skip the first half. Troubled. Perplexed. Cast down. He says the hard word first, in the plainest form he has, and then he sets a comma, and the comma is the place where faith is actually living.

That is not a man making the pressure sound lighter than it is. That is a man naming the pressure accurately and then telling you the one thing it has failed to do.

So let me say the heavier half out loud, because it has been carried in that house without a name for four years. It is not the empty list. It is the second thing that grows underneath the empty list: the suspicion that a proper believer, a real one, would have been out of this by now. That somewhere there was a turning you missed. That other people pray and doors open, and you pray and the little wheel keeps spinning on the screen.

That suspicion is a lie, and I am not going to be delicate about it. Your circumstances are not a report on your trust. There is no arrangement anywhere in Scripture where believing harder converts itself into hours of work, and the Spirit who lives in you has never once graded you against a jobs list.

So what has your faith been doing all this time

Not filling that list. Let us have it said plainly, and then let us look properly at what it has been doing, because it is not nothing, and it has gone unnoticed in that house for a long time.

Your faith is the reason you pray at the window at all. It is the reason you still put the bin out on a Tuesday when a smaller man would have stopped bothering. It is the reason you have not concluded that God is a story people tell, which is honestly the simpler position from where you are standing, and it is the reason you finish the van run properly when one comes.

You have kept your hands on God through a stretch that has quietly closed the mouths of people with far easier lives. Scripture has a word for that and the word is not weakness, it is endurance, and it calls the one doing it blessed (James 1:12). His Spirit is holding you up in it, and He is not standing behind you with a mark scheme.

Nobody who has never woken at four to an empty screen gets to tell you your faith is thin. And nobody, myself included, gets to tell you that the screen is soon to fill up, because that is a promise no one on this page was ever authorized to make.

What the name over this door is actually claiming

Faith over poverty does not mean faith removes poverty. It never has meant that, and if somebody told you it did, they handed you a sentence the Bible does not say and it has cost you years of quietly wondering what is wrong with you.

Here is what the name does claim, and it claims it honestly. Poverty does not get to defeat your faith. It does not get to decide what you are worth. It does not get to write the last line about your life, because there is a longer document than a bank statement and God is the one holding the pen.

You have a worth that was set somewhere else entirely, and set by hands that were not yours. The written word puts it in three words, precious and honored and loved (Isaiah 43:4), and the Holy Spirit keeps saying it inside you on the mornings you cannot feel a syllable of it.

And if this has come to the point of real danger, a home at risk, a family going without food, then reach for real help today and reach for it without one ounce of shame on you. That is not a failure of faith. Faith has hands, and using them is what hands are for.

The breakthrough

The order is the whole of it, and the order is not a lever.

Jesus set the measure of faith at a mustard seed in Luke 17:6, and the smallness in that picture was never a comment on how much anybody has. It was a statement about what kind of thing faith is. Not a weight you have to get up to. Something said out loud, with a mouth, by a person who has been given the standing to say it.

You have that standing, and it is yours in Christ rather than issued on the strength of what comes in, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a plain sentence at a landing window more than a man talking to himself before dawn.

What gets spoken here is not an instruction to an app and not a demand at a harbor office. It is the truth about God, said out loud by somebody who is short, and there is no older form of worship on earth than that one.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing where you are. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, and it is not issued on the strength of what you have coming in this week. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely brave. What God does about the work and the money is His, however He answers, and nothing on this page pretends to know.

  1. Empty morning list on this phone, you are a fact and you are not a sentence about me. Paul was pressed on every side and not crushed, and 2 Corinthians 4:8 keeps both halves of that in one breath without softening either one. In the name of Jesus I call you exactly what you are, and I do not hand you my trust on the way past.
  2. Suspicion that I would be out of this by now, you do not get to sit in my chest and read a verdict off a screen. The written word calls me precious and honored and loved (Isaiah 43:4), and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps saying it in me on the mornings I cannot feel a word of it. What I am worth was settled long before the trade went, and it is not reviewed every time I refresh a list.
  3. Lord, You are the God who keeps watch over me and never once dozes off on the keeping (Psalm 121:3). I thank You, because I am still at that window talking to You after four winters, and that is Your Spirit holding me and not my own nerve. You get my first sentence this morning, and the harbor gets the second.
